Evolution of the Cadet
The fire service is built on tradition and generational learning meaning that a firefighter would volunteer and invite his son or daughter to set the next building block of the department. This has been the usual circumstance since the early years of the fire service.
Dedicated youth programs were officially created in the 1940's and 50's to allow young men and women the chance to gain valuable experience and to promote overall interest for the next generation of firefighter. These programs have had several names including Cadet, Junior, and Explorer.
